First Aid Course Type Information

General information about course content

Our aim is to create First Aiders. We strive to enhance the health and safety of our communities by providing relevant first aid training that meets the needs of our clients. We hold our practical training sessions in a relaxed, friendly environment and they are facilitated by professional Trainers in a fun and interesting manner using quality materials relevant to New Zealanders. We focus our teaching on real life scenarios to help Learners develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency situation as well as to anticipate and prevent accidents from occurring. Upon completion you will be issued a certificate.

We offer two delivery styles. Option 1 is online learning + practical session. Option 2 (available for private groups only) is self-directed learning worksheets + full or half day training session (traditional delivery).

Practical Training Solutions is a registered Private Training Establishment (PTE). Our first aid courses are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Workplace First Aider Course


This course will equip you with the skills and confidence to deal with emergencies at home or at work. It covers NZQA Unit Standards 6400, 6401, 6402.  This is the first aid course for anyone who requires a first aid certificate that meets NZQA and WorkSafe requirements.

While we are operating under the COVID-19 alert level system, the delivery of our Workplace First Aider course is delivered through NZQA approved online learning + a 1-on-1 or small group practical training session. The practical training session will be up to two hours which together with the online learning component will meet the 12 hour time requirement for unit standard based workplace first aid training.

The traditional delivery method is available for private groups is made up of 8.5 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Revalidation First Aid Course


This course refreshes your first aid knowledge and is required in order to keep your certification current. To be eligible your current first aid certificate must be no older than 2 years and 3 months.  We can only revalidate your previous certificate which covers NZQA Unit Standards 6401, 6402 and 6400 or 6401 and 6402.

While we are operating under the COVID-19 alert level system, the delivery of our Workplace First Aider course is delivered through NZQA approved online learning + a 1-on-1 or small group practical training session. The practical training session will be up to one and a half hours which together with the online learning component will meet the 6 hour time requirement for unit standard based workplace first aid training.

The traditional delivery method is available for private groups is made up of 4 hours class time / training session and Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Foundation First Aid Course


This course is delivered by request for private groups. It teaches  you the skills to provide basic first aid to a patient while help is on its way and covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402 and 6401.

The traditional delivery method is made up of 6 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

CPR Course


This course teaches you the skills to care for patients who have stopped breathing. It covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402.

This first aid course gives you the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to administer first aid for a wide range of injuries and illnesses. It equips you to manage emergency situations. It is the recommended course for designated workplace first aiders. This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6402, 6401 and 6400.

Course Duration

To meet NZQA requirements the Workplace First Aider course is a minimum of 12 hours long.

While we are operating under the COVID-19 alert level system, the delivery of our Workplace First Aider course is delivered through NZQA approved online learning + a 1-on-1 or small group practical training session. The practical training session will be up to two hours which together with the online learning component will meet the 12 hour time requirement for unit standard based workplace first aid training.  Our Workplace First Aider course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6401, 6402 and 6400; some people may call this course a Comprehensive or Level 2 First Aid course.

Traditional courses are made up of 8.5 hours class time / training session (includes breaks) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Online Learning (before practical session)

During your online learning we explain information and you will work through simple scenarios and quizzes to reinforce and apply your learning.  You will learn how to create an emergency plan so you are prepared to manage a first aid scenario that you may encounter at home or work.  You need to bring your completed emergency plan documents (2 pages, 3 sides) to your practical session so you can discuss them with your Trainer.  Please allow up to 10 hours to complete your online learning.  You can login as many times as you like before your practical session.

Self-directed Learning Module (for traditional delivery method)

The Self-directed Learning Module (homework) and associated written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.  The module is made up of an information booklet and a 6 page worksheet which needs to be completed prior to the training session and handed in on the day of training.  Make sure all activities are completed.

NZQA Unit Standards

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are:
6400 – Manage first aid in an emergency situation (level 3, 2 credits)
6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
6402 – Provide basic life support (level 1, 1 credit)

Practical Training Solutions can register these credits on your NZQA Record of Achievement, if you provide us with your NZQA number. If you do not yet have an NZQA Record of Achievement, we can arrange this for you.

We have a comprehensive schedule of Workplace First Aider course practical sessions (compliments online learning) held at our venue in Hamilton East. This course revalidates your previous first aid certificate. The Revalidation First Aid course refreshes your first aid knowledge and practical skills and ensures you maintain currency and confidence.

This course provides you with the foundation first aid skills to deal with common injuries and illnesses for a single patient. This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6402 and 6401.  We offer this course, by request, for private group bookings.

6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
6402 – Provide resuscitation level 2 (level 1, 1 credit)

The standard course fee for the Foundation First Aid course is $170. We offer an online booking discount of $10 and an early payment discount of $10, which reduce the course fee to $150. The early payment discount applies if payment is received at least 5 days before the course date.
