Workplace First Aider Course


This course will equip you with the skills and confidence to confidently deal with first aid emergencies at home or at work. It covers NZQA unit standards 6402, 6401, and 6400.  This is the first aid course for anyone who requires a first aid certificate that meets NZQA and  the most common WorkSafe requirements.

Revalidation First Aid Course


This course refreshes your first aid knowledge and skills and revalidates your previous certificate.  Depending on your previous certificate, this course covers unit standards 6402, 6401, and 6400 or unit standards 6402 and 6401. To be eligible your current first aid certificate must be no older than 2 years and 3 months.

Foundation First Aid Course


This course provides you with the foundation first aid skills to deal with common injuries and illnesses for a single patient. It covers NZQA unit standards 6402 and 6401.

CPR Course


This course teaches you how to perform CPR and respond to choking emergencies. It covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402.

Our first aid workshops are tailored to your needs. They can be designed with or without units standard assessment and provide you with flexible options in case you need something different than our standard first aid courses.

NZQA unit standards

This course includes assessment against NZQA unit standards:

  • 6400 – Manage first aid in an emergency situation (level 3, 2 credits)
  • 6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
  • 6402 – Provide basic life support (level 1, 1 credit)

Practical Training Solutions can register these credits on your NZQA Record of Achievement if you provide us with your NZQA number and date of birth. If you do not have an NZQA Record of Achievement we can set this up for you.

 

Course content

Our Workplace First Aider Training Course prepares you to be an effective first aider in your workplace, home or community. It teaches you simple tools and repeats basic concepts that enhance learning and provides you with a simple action plan that you can apply in an emergency. Topics covered during the coures include:

  • The role of the Workplace First Aider
  • Recognising first aid problems
  • Managing an emergency scene
  • Identifying and obtaining appropriate medical help
  • Identifying and using appropriate first aid equipment
  • Priorities in first aid
  • Basic life support assessment (DRSABCD) CPR, choking, shock and bleeding
  • Assessing and managing injuries (burns, fractures, soft tissue injuries, impalements, poisoning)
  • Assessing and managing medical conditions (heart attack, asthma, anaphylaxis, stroke, seizures, diabetes)

Each Learner is provided with a Practical Training Solutions Quick Reference First Aid Guide that serves as a practical reference for emergencies and contains relevant information and practical tips on the various topics covered during the course.

The standard course fee for our Workplace First Aider course is $225 (inclusive GST). We offer a range of sector discounts as well as an early payment discount. If you are associated with one of our sectors, please ensure you complete the correct booking form to access the respective discount.

Course duration

To meet NZQA and Toitū Te Waiora requirements our Workplace First Aider course is a minimum of 12 hours long.

  • Blended style course: Allow around 10 hours to complete the online learning.  The online learning can be completed at the learner’s own pace and you can log in as many times as you like. The practical session is 2 hours long.
  • Traditional style course: The self-directed learning homework takes around 4 hours. You will need to print the document and hand it in at the beginning of your practical session. The practical session is 8 hours long, plus breaks. This can be delivered in one or multiple sessions.
  • Face-to-face style courses are offered by request and can be scheduled to suit your needs.

 

Pre-course learning

Our blended and traditional style courses include pre-coures learning. This is completed in learner’s own time and at their own pace and needs to be completed before the practical session.

Online Learning (for blended style courses)

The online learning covers all course theory. Learners read information, visit relevant websites, watch videos, and complete multiple choice quizzes to reinforce learning. As part of the online learning learners create a first aid emergency plan based on an ememergency scenario of their own choice (and therefore relevant to learner) that they will bring to their practical session and discuss with the Trainer. Learners can contact us at any time to ask questions.

The online learning takes up to 10 hours; the actual time depends on prior knowledge and reading speed. The online learning can be accessed on a mobile device, laptop or desktop (Chrome or Firefox). Learners can log in as many times as you like to complete your online learning.

Self-directed learning homework (for traditional style courses)

The self-directed learning homework provides introductory information on first aid emergencies, accident and injury prevention, preparedness, and response. Learners read information and complete workbook activities. 

The self-directed learning homework takes up to 4 hours; the actual time depends on prior knowledge and reading speed. It comprises an information pack (that can be read online) and a workbook that is designed to be printed and completed by hand.

NZQA unit standards

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are based on your previous certificate. This course revalidates your previous assessment against NZQA unit standards 6402, 6401, and 6400. It can therefore revalidate a previous Workplace First Aider certificate (or equivalent certificate demonstrating assessment against unit standards 6402, 6401, and 6400) or a previous Foundation First Aid certificate (or equivalent certificate demonstrating assessment against unit standards 6402 and 6401).

 

Revalidation First Aid course eligibility

First aid certificates are valid for two years. To be eligible for revalidation training your previous first aid certificate must be no older than 2 years and 3 months at the time you complete your revalidation training. If a certificate is not renewed within this period you will have to re-do your initial first aid training.

Revalidation training revalidates your previous certificate. To obtain a unit standard-based revalidation certificate, your previous certificate must show unit standards. If your previous certificate does not meet these criteria please contact us for options.

Our first aid workshops are tailored to your needs. Whether a two hour or full day workshop, with and without unit standard assessment, with or without pre-course learning, at your place or our venue, we provide full flexibility and are happy to help you design your first aid workshop.

We can also assist you with conducting a WorkSafe needs assessment to identify the first aid training needs for your workplace and design a tailored workshop to meet your compliance needs.
