First Aid Course Type Information

General information about course content

Our aim is to create First Aiders. We strive to enhance the health and safety of our communities by providing relevant first aid training that meets the needs of our clients. We hold our practical training sessions in a relaxed, friendly environment and they are facilitated by professional Trainers in a fun and interesting manner using quality materials relevant to New Zealanders. We focus our teaching on real life scenarios to help Learners develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency situation as well as to anticipate and prevent accidents from occurring. Upon completion you will be issued a certificate.  Practical Training Solutions is a registered Private Training Establishment (PTE). Our first aid courses are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

We offer two NZQA approved delivery methods.  Both have been developed to meet the 12 hour time requirement for unit standard based workplace first aid training.

1. Blended course made up of online learning (completed in the learner's own time) + a short, small group practical training session. The session will be up to 2 hours and compliments the online learning which is completed before the practical session. Practical sessions are scheduled every two hours 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday.  These sessions are held at our venue in Hamilton East.

2. Traditional course made up of self-directed learning worksheets (completed in the learner's own time) + a full day or half day (depending on course type) training session.  The Workplace First Aider session starts at 8:15am and ends at 5pm; the Revalidation First Aid session starts at 8:15am and ends at 12:45pm.  Sessions are held at different venues in Hamilton.

Workplace First Aider Course


This course will equip you with the skills and confidence to deal with emergencies at home or at work. It covers NZQA Unit Standards 6400, 6401, 6402.  This is the first aid course for anyone who requires a first aid certificate that meets NZQA and WorkSafe requirements.

Our blended course (online learning + short practical session) allows us to offer safe first aid training while we are operating under the COVID-19 alert level system.  Allow up to 10 hours to complete the online learning and emergency plan activity.

Our traditional course (homework worksheets + longer training session) is available when the Alert Level allows is made up of 8.5 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Revalidation First Aid Course


This course refreshes your first aid knowledge and is required in order to keep your certification current. To be eligible your current first aid certificate must be no older than 2 years and 3 months.  We can only revalidate your previous certificate which covers NZQA Unit Standards 6401, 6402 and 6400 or 6401 and 6402.

Our blended course (online learning + short practical session) allows us to offer safe first aid training while we are operating under the COVID-19 alert level system.  Allow up to 5 hours to complete the online learning and emergency plan activity. The practical training session will be up to one and a half hours which together with the online learning component will meet the 6 hour time requirement for refresher training

Our traditional course (homework worksheets + longer training session) is available when the Alert Level allows is made up of 4 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 2 hour Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Foundation First Aid Course


This course is delivered by request for private groups. It teaches  you the skills to provide basic first aid to a patient while help is on its way and covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402 and 6401.

The traditional delivery method is made up of 6 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time. This course is offered by request.

CPR Course


This course teaches you the skills to care for patients who have stopped breathing. It covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402.

This first aid course gives you the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to administer first aid for a wide range of injuries and illnesses. It equips you to manage emergency situations. It is the recommended course for designated workplace first aiders. Our Workplace First Aider course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6401, 6402 and 6400; some people may call this course a Comprehensive or Level 2 First Aid course.

Course Duration

To meet NZQA requirements our Workplace First Aider course is a minimum of 12 hours long.

Blended course: Allow up to 10 hours to complete the online learning and emergency plan activity.  The online learning can be completed at the Learner’s pace; they can login as many times as they like before their practical session. The practical training session will be up to 2 hours which together with the online learning component will meet the 12 hour time requirement for unit standard based workplace first aid training.

Traditional course: 8.5 hours class time / training session (includes breaks) + a 4 hours Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Online Learning for Blended Course (complete before practical session)

During the online learning we explain information and the Learner works through simple scenarios and quizzes to reinforce and apply the learning.  They will learn how to create an emergency plan so they are prepared to manage a first aid scenario that they may encounter at home or work.  The completed emergency plan documents (2 pages, 3 sides) must be brought to the practical session and will be discussed with the Trainer.  Please allow up to 10 hours to complete online learning.  The Learner can login as many times as they like before your practical session.

Self-directed Learning Module for Traditional Course (complete before training session)

The Self-directed Learning Module (homework) and associated written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.  The module is made up of an information booklet and a 6 page worksheet which needs to be completed prior to the training session and handed in on the day of training.  Make sure all activities are completed.

NZQA Unit Standards

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are:
6400 – Manage first aid in an emergency situation (level 3, 2 credits)
6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
6402 – Provide basic life support (level 1, 1 credit)

Practical Training Solutions can register these credits on your NZQA Record of Achievement, if you provide us with your NZQA number. If you do not yet have an NZQA Record of Achievement, we can arrange this for you.

We have a comprehensive schedule of Workplace First Aider course practical sessions for the blended course held at our venue in Hamilton East. This course revalidates your previous first aid certificate. The Revalidation First Aid course refreshes your first aid knowledge and practical skills and ensures you maintain currency and confidence.

Course Duration

To meet NZQA requirements, the Revalidation course is a minimum of 6 hours long.

Blended course: Allow up to 5 hours to complete the online learning and emergency plan activity.  The online learning can be completed at the Learner’s pace; they can login as many times as they like before their practical session. The practical training session will be up to 1.5 hours which together with the online learning component will meet the 6 hours time requirement for unit standard based workplace first aid training.

Traditional course: 4.5 hours class time / training session (includes breaks) + a 2 hours Self-directed Learning Module (homework) that Learners complete in their own time.

Online Learning for Blended Course (complete before practical session)

During the online learning learners refresh their first aid knowledge and any updates / changes will be explained. The Learner works through simple scenarios and quizzes to reinforce and apply the learning.  They will learn how to create an emergency plan so they are prepared to manage a first aid scenario that they may encounter at home or work.  The completed emergency plan documents (2 pages, 3 sides) must be brought to the practical session and will be discussed with the Trainer.  Please allow up to 5 hours to complete online learning.  The Learner can login as many times as they like before your practical session.

Self-directed Learning Module for Traditional Course (complete before training session)

The Self-directed Learning Module (homework) and associated written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.  The module is made up of an information booklet and a 6 page worksheet which needs to be completed prior to the training session and handed in on the day of training.  Make sure all activities are completed.

NZQA Unit Standards

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are based on your previous certificate.  We can only revalidate your previous certificate which covers Unit Standards 6402 or 6401 and 6402 or 6400 or 6401 and 6402.

This course provides you with the foundation first aid skills to deal with common injuries and illnesses for a single patient. This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6402 and 6401.  We offer this course, by request, for private group bookings.

To meet NZQA requirements the Foundation First Aid course is a minimum of 8 hours long. Courses are made up of a 6 hour training session and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module that learners complete in their own time.

Self-directed Learning Module
The Self-directed Learning Module (homework) and associated written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.  The Module is made up of an information booklet and a 6 page worksheet which needs to be completed prior to the training session and handed in on the day of training.  Make sure all activities are completed.

NZQA Unit Standards

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are:
6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
6402 – Provide resuscitation level 2 (level 1, 1 credit)

Schedule

Course fee

The standard course fee for the Foundation First Aid course is $170. We offer an online booking discount of $10 and an early payment discount of $10, which reduce the course fee to $150. The early payment discount applies if payment is received at least 5 days before the course date.

This course teaches you how to perform CPR and respond to choking emergencies. This course covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402.
