First Aid Course Type Information

General information about course content

Our aim is to create First Aiders. We strive to enhance the health and safety of our communities by providing relevant first aid training that meets the needs of our clients. We hold our training sessions in a relaxed, friendly environment and they are taught by professional Trainers in a fun and interesting manner using quality materials relevant to New Zealanders. We focus our teaching on real life scenarios to help Learners develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency situation as well as to anticipate and prevent accidents from occurring. Upon completion you will be issued a certificate.

Practical Training Solutions is a registered Private Training Establishment (PTE). Our first aid courses are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Workplace First Aid Course


This course will equip you with the skills and confidence to deal with emergencies at home or at work. It covers NZQA Unit Standards 6400, 6401, 6402.  This is the first aid course for anyone who requires a first aid certificate that meets NZQA and WorkSafe requirements. The course is made up of 8.5 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module that Learners complete in their own time.

Revalidation First Aid Course


This course refreshes your first aid knowledge and is required in order to keep your certification current. To be eligible your current first aid certificate must be no older than 2 years and 3 months. The course is made up of 4 hours class time / training session and Self-directed Learning Module that Learners complete in their own time.

Foundation First Aid Course


This course teaches gives you the skills to provide basic first aid to a patient while help is on its way. It covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402 and 6401. The course is made up of 6 hours class time / training session (usually one day) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module that Learners complete in their own time.

CPR Course


This course teaches you the skills to care for patients who have stopped breathing. It covers NZQA Unit Standard 6402.

This first aid course gives you the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to administer first aid for a wide range of injuries and illnesses. It equips you to manage emergency situations. It is the recommended course for designated workplace first aiders. This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6402, 6401 and 6400.

Course Duration

To meet NZQA requirements the Workplace First Aid course is a minimum of 12 hours long. Courses are made up of 8.5 hours class time / training session (includes breaks) and a 4 hour Self-directed Learning Module that Learners complete in their own time.

Self-directed Learning Module

The Self-directed Learning Module (homework) and associated written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.  The Module is made up of an information booklet and a 6 page worksheet which needs to be completed prior to the training session and handed in on the day of training.  Make sure all activities are completed.

NZQA Unit Standards

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are:
6400 – Manage first aid in emergency situations (level 3, 2 credits)
6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
6402 – Provide resuscitation level 2 (level 1, 1 credit)

Practical Training Solutions can register these credits on your NZQA Record of Achievement, if you provide us with your NZQA number. If you do not yet have an NZQA Record of Achievement, we can arrange this for you.

Schedule and booking

We have a comprehensive schedule of Workplace First Aid course training sessions – most week days, Saturdays and evenings.  The training session runs from 8:30am to 5pm (or 5:30pm to 9:30pm for the evening class). Each Learner is provided with a Practical Training Solutions Quick Reference First Aid Guide that serves as a practical reference for emergencies and contains relevant information and practical tips on the various topics covered during the course.

This course revalidates your previous first aid certificate. The Revalidation First Aid course refreshes your first aid knowledge and practical skills and ensures you maintain currency and confidence.

Course Duration

To meet NZQA requirements, the Revalidation course is a minimum of 6 hours long, made up of 4 hours training session time and a Self-directed Learning Module that learners complete in their own time.

Self-directed Learning Module

The Self-directed Learning Module (homework) and associated written assessment materials will be issued at the time of booking.  The Module is made up of an information booklet and a 6 page worksheet which needs to be completed prior to the training session and handed in on the day of training.  Make sure all activities are completed.

The NZQA Unit Standards associated with this course are based on your previous certificate.

This course provides you with the foundation first aid skills to deal with common injuries and illnesses for a single patient. This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6402 and 6401.

The standard course fee for the Foundation First Aid course is $170. We offer an online booking discount of $10 and an early payment discount of $10, which reduce the course fee to $150. The early payment discount applies if payment is received at least 5 days before the course date.
