Deviating from the PTS system: (Deviation 3: Not explaining the reasons for the first aid response)

The most effective care comes from first aiders who understand the reasons for their actions and apply common sense.

This is one of the key principles of the PTS training and assessment system. We explain that to our learners through this poster, which is part of all pre-course learning materials.

It is your role as a PTS trainer to ensure that learners develop this understanding during their practical session.

If you don’t explain, in simple terms, the reasons for the first aid response actions for shock, your learners will have to rely on their memory or need a detailed step-by-step guide in a first aid emergency. This is because they don’t have the necessary knowledge to apply their common sense to the situation they are faced with.

Because every first aid emergency situation is slightly different, it is critical that learners are equipped to adapt their first aid response to the situation at hand and they can only do that if they understand the reasons for the first aid response actions they have learned.
