2022 Educational Achievements:
Annual Quantitative Analysis Report

1. Introduction
This is the fifth Practical Training Solutions annual report covering the period 1 January to 31 December 2023. In this report 2023 is referred to as the reporting year.
This report describes Practical Training Solutions’ educational activities and achievements in numbers, presenting key learner and client organisation statistics and quantitative learner evaluation results, including trends over time. Due to differences in availability and accessibility of data collected before the use of PTSWEB in May 2020, the starting year of trends shown in this report differs among datasets. Due to changes in evaluation form questions over time, some tables and/or graphs in this report may differ from those in previous reports.
This report is designed to be read stand-alone but it also informs Practical Training Solutions’ Annual compliance and strategic progress report.
This report is structured as follows:
- The year in numbers (Section 2)
- Our learners (Section 3)
- Our client organisations (Section 4)
- Learner evaluation results – all learners (Section 5)
- Learner evaluation results – by learner ethnicity (Section 6)
- Learner evaluation results – by course style (Section 7)
- Learner evaluation results – by course location (Section 8)

Learners by course type
Learners trained by month
Learners trained by month (cumulative per year)

3. Our learners
Number of learners by ethnicity and comparison to national ethnic make-up
The graph below shows the ethnic makeup of Practical Training Solutions learners compared to the national makeup as measured during the 2018 Census. During the census people could specify multiple ethnicities, which is why the total census percentages exceed 100%.
Learners by sector
Domestic and international students
The table below shows a break-down of learners into domestic students (as defined for educational purposes) because they are New Zealand citizens or residents (top category) or because they are exempt by notice in the Gazette (middle category) and international students (bottom category).
NZQA unit standard credit reporting
The table below shows the percentage and number (in parentheses) of learners who had NZQA unit standard credits reported to their New Zealand Record of Achievement (NZRoA).
Previous certificates presented for revalidation training
The table below shows the first aid providers who issued the certificates presented by learners for revalidation training.
4. Our client organisations
Repeat and new client organisations
Repeat client organisations are organisations with at least one learner trained before the beginning of the respective year. New client organisations are identified when the first learner of that organisation is trained and are included in the ‘Clients – New’ numbers for the respective year. This analysis goes back to May 2020 when data recording in PTSWEB started.
The graph below shows the ratio of repeat over new client organisations per year. The greater the ratio, the greater the proportion of repeat client organisations.
Active client organisations by sector
Active client organisations are organisations with at least one learner trained in the 2-year period prior to and during the reporting year.
5. Learner evaluation results – all learners
Learner ratings of overall course satisfaction
Learner ratings of overall course satisfaction, theory and practical course components, trainer, and venue

Learner comments on statement “The training resources and activities were engaging”.
Learner comments on learning environment
Learner comments on statement “The learning environment helped me become a confident first aider”.
Learners who commented ‘Strongly agree’ or ‘Agree’ on the statements below
Learner ratings of their first aid skills, confidence and knowledge before the course
Mean (or average) learner ratings shown below were calculated by averaging all individual ratings in the respective year. Standard deviation (SD) is a reflection of the variation of learner ratings. Larger standard deviations indicate greater differences among learners.
Learner ratings of their first aid skills, confidence and knowledge after the course
Change of learner skills, confidence and knowledge during the course
The table below shows learners’ mean change in learner skills, confidence and knowledge resulting from attending their first aid course. It is calculated by averaging all differences between learner before and after ratings in the respective year.
